Biography

Margaret Stanier (Peggy) is a research lawyer and litigation solicitor whose role is providing the lawyers at Stevens Virgin with up-to-date knowledge of the law in all their practice areas and the analysis of complex legal issues, which they can then use to provide timely and accurate advice to their clients. She also writes appellate factums, trial submissions, chambers applications and opinion letters.

Peggy enhances her research skills with her litigation experience, having appeared at all levels of court in British Columbia as well as the Federal Court Trial Division and Court of Appeal on cases involving insurance defence, tort litigation, administrative law, and the regulation of professions.

Early in her career Peggy prepared legal opinions and drafted liability arguments in various motor vehicle and other personal injury actions, such as Kwok v. BC Ferry Corporation, 1987 CanLII 2535. She assisted with the prosecution of actions involving claims of securities fraud and breach of fiduciary duty including Huff v. Price, 1988 CanLII 3064 and was co-counsel in Coronation Insurance Co. Ltd. v. Clearly Canadian Beverage Corp., 1999 BCCA 11. She regularly prepares arguments on the admissibility of expert reports and evidentiary issues that arise at trial.

Peggy joined Stevens Virgin in 2009. She graduated from the University of Victoria Faculty of Law in 1981. Following her call to the bar in 1982, she taught Legal Research and Writing at the Faculty of Law for two years then went into private practice as a litigation solicitor providing research and litigation preparation to mid-size and small firms on a contract basis. For eight years Peggy practiced as a research lawyer and litigation solicitor at a well known Vancouver law firm, then returned to contract work until she joined Stevens Virgin.

As an active member of the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch, including the Legal Research section, Appellate Advocacy section and the Women Lawyers Forum, Peggy has mentored several young women lawyers. She has also presented several times at CLE BC Legal Research programs. Peggy is a member of Lawyers Rights Watch Canada and is a director of Lawyers Rights Watch (Legal Research), for whom she writes and edits research papers for publication and submission to the United Nations and other Human Rights bodies.
